How Far Can You Take Wordpress Specifically The Chipmunk Theme
Shared by Slouischarles · 15d ago · 12 comments

I'm building my MVP with the Chipmunk Theme. It's going to house all the resources for my community. How far can I customize this? Will I eventually have to build from the ground up? It comes with a login/password system, bookmarks etc.

What should I account for while I build this out? Basically unknown, unknowns. Thanks

What do you imagine is the endpoint of what you're building? All just depends on needs.

For now, it's just to customize/design the site around r/hobbies banner type of font and design. Redesign the boxes (which are the categories/subcategories). I think I can hang with that for a long time. The end goal would be for people to answer some questions and be suggested the best resources of which they can bookmark when they are ready. The main categories are health & fitness, personal finance, career, business, technology and hobbies.

Tons of folks use Wordpress (https://www.wpbeginner.com/showcase/40-most-notable-big-name-brands-that-are-using-wordpress/)... can imagine your needs are definitely met without having to go ground up. That said, I'm not a user myself, so can't say with certainty.

My sister's company uses wordpress and I hear nightmarish stories. Seems the popular choices these days are Wix & Webflow, instead...

Thanks for that. One thing I noticed is none of those have login/password or database which my theme does. (I'm not technical yet so don't know the implications. Just learning now). Yeah I looked into Webflow. Looked good but the wordpress theme was had pretty much everything out the box.

I've heard nightmare stories as well especially with the use of plug-ins and add-on. I'm goingto be very careful with that for sure. Thanks for taking the time to comment!!!

Awesome. Good luck and keep us/me posted! :)

I don't know the answer but happy to share mine. I knocked together a WordPress theme to create https://skilledup.life within days. Some stats:

1. Less than 1 year old
2. 584 volunteers from 43 countries
3. 28 tech companies
4. 1 salaried employee

I want to at least run this version without any change until we reach 1000 volunteers. This is my first proof point to convince me it's worth spending my resources on SkilledUp Life.

At 1000 volunteer point, I might seek out professional help to improve the Wordpress implementation. What we have might be enough to get us to 10,000 volunteers. At which point, I will decide whether to ditch this and rebuild on LAMP or similar tech stack.

Hope that's helpful.

This helps A LOT. It means WordPress can go pretty far with customization. Also looks like the speed of the site will be fine so long as I don't add a ton of nonsense plugins.

manojranaweera · 13d ago

Yes, I need to do a proper clean-up and get rid of many plugins.

If you really want a great example, and not my mickey mouse product, take a look at https://iatro.health/. 100% built using WordPress. They are one of https://techcelerate.ventures companies. It's the second year of trading for them and they are getting closer to reporting some serious revenues.

But in their case, CEO built it initially and knows WordPress really well. In my case, until https://Skilledup.life, I've only built my own websites. I'm actually hoping to add social elements to https://techcelerate.ventures once I finish the current site.

Ironically, this will bring our community from iatro back to Techcelerate. A lot to do.

Just to finish off, until I built https://skilledup.life, every other product since 2004 relied on others. This time, I don't need anyone else. Hence the speed from though to product.

The predecessor to SkilledUp Life - https://www.skilledup.life/background-to-skilledup-life/

1. 1st April 2020 - Idea came to my head
2. 7th April 2020 - went live
3. 20th April 2020 - first paying subscriber

So you can be that fast thanks to WordPress. Hope this gives you enough confidence to go ahead with WordPress.

Hells yeah. I might just stay with WordPress for quite a while. Looks like you got some traction. Do you think you are focused enough on one area to crush while improving the model/user experience?

I'm on a 20-year plan. https://skilledup.life is just a tiny part of it. Right now it's at No 3 in terms of attention.
