General thoughts on Clubhouse?
Shared by JayLewis · 7d ago · 21 comments

Hi all! Not working on a project yet, just checking out the community. Curious to know what you all think of Clubhouse? Good/bad/ugly?

Also curious to know who are people you follow that routinely spot/write about great future products? Feels like Clubhouse was hidden in plain sight. Twitch is to YouTube what Clubhouse is to Spotify/Apple Podcasts. Would've been awesome to spot that sooner :)

Cheers!

It'll be interesting to see what happens post-pandemic, when things open up again and people are itching to travel and discover outside the corner of their 4 walls. I guess that's why they're rushing to grow super fast before they loose momentum of stickiness and habit. Also a lot of audio chat rooms before and coming our way b/c of success that CH has exhibited during the last 10+ months. But it's starting to get some negative press due to lack of privacy and the Agora integration that Jason Calacanis recently tweeted this weekend (with possible data leaks in China). I can't find a privacy or terms of service for CH, kind of taking their sweet time to get to a certain size before addressing privacy issues/concerns). Despo seem interesting as a genZ Insta (useful when that generation travels again).

+1! Post-pandemic is the test. They've a tight window.

Maybe unrightfully so, but not particularly worried about the data aspect. People will rage about it, and they'll fix it. Feel like that's the general tenor of the Internet; if something is awesome and free, people use it regardless. Only bear case there is FB (but they still own WA and IG lol, so...).

as a product it's ok, not my thing; but i'll use it cause ppl that'd normally be out of reach on social, are open to DMs rn.

also it's ripe for making/joining niche clubs relevant to your project and start new growth channel.

That's what I figured. A good chance for anyone swift enough to make a play and get some clubhouse ear-share.

A vocal conversation between two or three people is a great feeling, has great value. The back and forth, the behind if idea , the humain Connexion between them.

I believe internet has not yet a service mapping those audio conversations.

I think clubhouse is succeding in being this place. But with Internet you can enlarge those conversations

Great breeding ground for perverts of all kinds, political or human.

What do you mean? As opposed to... the Internet at large?

Welcome, Jay! Fred Wilson writes little blurbs daily, some of them absolute nuggets: https://avc.com/.

Haven't used Clubhouse yet, but I think that that style of icon will become standard soon. The concept of realistic pictures + a rotary of images.

JayLewis · 4d ago

Thanks for the Fred rec! Interesting style.

I do like the icon. Can imagine, though, everyone doing that'll get a bit cliche real quick.

jackson · 7d ago

+1! Love the icon. Long-needed change.

I would like Club House if they didn't have this snobbish marketing strategy to be iOS only.

JayLewis · 4d ago

Have they described why they decided to be exclusively iOS? Or is this just the accepted reason. Genuinely don't know, am curious.

sole-fields · 4d ago

They definitely played the elitist card from the start. Given traction, their FOMO generation seems to be working? (It is a topic of scorn/conversation on Frontier, after all -- all press is good press, I suppose).

Appears they're building out an Android version as we speak.

Out of curiosity, since you're an Android user and unhappy -- does this make you more or less inclined to use the app when it's available? Interested to get your take.

Pumping up valuations for C. From 0 to $1B in less than a year, and now trying to onboard as many communities as possible. Probably on the way for one more financing round in astronomical valuations. Markets are irrational right now and VC's are capitalising on that.

phaethon-psichis · 6d ago

My understanding of this post, and the related tweet [deleted] from DG.
Clubhouse is a VC owned and managed venture and is going down the drain. There are so many toxic people there and so much bad publicity. Why would anyone want to get in there? Is C so important for Pioneer? Pioneer and Clubhouse is not a match and so we have this deep thinking JayLewis individual who might potentially some day work on a project, trying to find out.
So Pioneer is going to Clubhouse?. Sounds like the Joe Rogan deal with Spotify.

Clubhouse is structurally so simple. It’ll either get bought or eaten by larger companies (e.g. Facebook). My opinion, anyway.

I feel like the UI is super reminiscent of Notion. Would be super interesting if Notion acquired/partnered with them.

If you were in Clubhouse's shoes, how would you approach next steps?

jonathanrstern · 7d ago

I wouldn't be surprised if Clubhouse persisted on their own for a while. Sort of like Snap.

They're doing a fabulous job, and I see why people love it. But.... I've always preferred text.

Chris Dixon (a16z) shared this a while back on Twitter, and I'll never forget it. I don't think it's his quote, but he linked to it. https://graydon2.dreamwidth.org/193447.html

"Text is the most socially useful communication technology. It works well in 1:1, 1:N, and M:N modes. It can be indexed and searched efficiently, even by hand. It can be translated. It can be produced and consumed at variable speeds. It is asynchronous. It can be compared, diffed, clustered, corrected, summarized and filtered algorithmically. It permits multiparty editing. It permits branching conversations, lurking, annotation, quoting, reviewing, summarizing, structured responses, exegesis, even fan fic. The breadth, scale and depth of ways people use text is unmatched by anything. There is no equivalent in any other communication technology for the social, communicative, cognitive and reflective complexity of a library full of books or an internet full of postings. Nothing else comes close."

What do you think: Is Clubhouse-style live audio here to stay?

jackson · 4d ago

Cool excerpt.

I do, indeed! It's more intimate radio. Er, radio for 2021.

That said, I don't personally find Clubhouse super compelling (yet?). Maybe not in the right circles, but tech convos are by and large brutal. Lots of fluffing and pontificating. If you have any good hosts you've come across, please do let me know.

jonathanrstern · 4d ago

Agreed. It's a neat app, but I'd rather spend my time reading good articles and books. Will definitely keep you posted if I find any good hosts/shows.
